Mission Statement

I have been privileged to be in the criminal courts of Harris County, Texas since 1985. I was an assistant prosecutor under District Attorney John Holmes until January of 1990 when I began work as a criminal defense attorney. I believe the experience gained from these two jobs provides me a perspective that qualifies me to be a judge that our community can be proud of.

First, I will respect both sides. The oath to follow the law that all judges take means that I have a sworn obligation to listen and weigh the arguments on both sides. No judge that strives to be fair should have a reputation as either a state or defense oriented judge.

Second, fairness is not a term that a judge should be fearful of or ashamed to seek in its rulings. When a case calls for the harshest punishment, it should be meted out. Where a measure of compassion is appropriate, I will so rule.

Third, I will strive to always be knowledgeable of the law such that the decisions I make comport with the laws of the State of Texas and the United States.

Finally, I will keep the interest of the community foremost in the decision that I am called upon to make. It is my belief that the community interest in fairness and even handed justice is never opposed to the principle of equal justice under the law for the accused OR the victim of a crime.
